SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – A Fairfield man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a school burglary spree and identity theft operation that spanned three San Francisco Bay Area counties, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
Christopher Britton, 34, was taken into custody on April 25 at a home on Sheldon Drive in Fairfield following a multi-agency investigation. He is accused of targeting elementary schools, where he allegedly stole teachers’ bank cards and made fraudulent purchases.
The case began in February, when staff at a Marin County elementary school reported missing items after returning from an all-school assembly. Detectives later learned that teachers at four schools in Marin experienced similar thefts involving bank cards taken from purses and wallets left in classrooms.
While free on bond for residential burglaries in Solano County, Britton allegedly committed nearly identical crimes at schools in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, authorities said.
The Vacaville Police Department led the operation to apprehend Britton, with assistance from police in Danville, Dublin, and Lafayette, as well as Marin County investigators.
Britton, who has prior convictions for burglary and identity theft dating back to 2016, has now been booked into the Marin County Jail on several new charges including burglary and fraud-related identity theft.
