In a significant crackdown on corruption, Amarendra Satapathy, the Sub Inspector (SI) in charge of Tangi Excise Station, was arrested by Odisha Vigilance on Tuesday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs8,000.

According to the Vigilance Department, Satapathy was extorting a monthly bribe from a licensed liquor vendor under threat of initiating false legal action. Fed up with the continued harassment, the vendor approached the Vigilance authorities with a complaint.

Acting on the tip-off, a trap was laid, and Satapathy was caught red-handed while accepting Rs8,000 in cash from the complainant. The entire amount was recovered and seized from his possession.

Following the arrest, Vigilance teams conducted simultaneous searches at Satapathy’s residence in Patitapaban Nagar, Bhubaneswar, and his native house in Ramchandrapur, Jatni, to investigate disproportionate assets.

A case has been registered under Bhubaneswar Vigilance PS Case No. 11/2025, U/s 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, and further investigation is underway.
