The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested two former employees of Union Bank for embezzling N4.2 million from a deceased customer’s account. The suspects, Idah Ogoh and Agbo Okwute, were apprehended on Friday in Makurdi, Benue State.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale revealed that the investigation began when the family of the deceased, Emmanuel Azer Agenna, approached the bank to claim the balance in the account for probate processing. Upon review, the family discovered discrepancies in the account balance, which was lower than expected.

The family filed a complaint with the bank regarding unauthorized debits. Further investigations revealed that Ogoh had procured a card that was handed over to Okwute, who subsequently delivered it to an accomplice for the unauthorized transfer and withdrawal of funds from the deceased’s account.

Multiple withdrawals were allegedly made through the accomplice. The suspects will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.
