DELAND, Fla. – Former University of Miami football player Avantae Traeviyon Williams, 24, has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at McCabe’s Bar in DeLand that left one man dead and another injured.
Police responded to the bar, located at 225 N. Amelia Avenue, around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. According to witnesses, a fight broke out among several men inside the bar before one individual pulled a gun and opened fire.
Keshod Harris, 32, of DeLand, was struck multiple times in the chest and later died at the hospital. A bartender was also injured in the incident, suffering gunshot wounds to both hands. The bartender is expected to recover from non-life-threatening injuries.
Williams, a former standout high school recruit once ranked the No. 1 safety in the country by Rivals, played college football for the University of Miami. However, he was dismissed from the team following an arrest on domestic violence charges.
DeLand Police announced Williams’ arrest on Monday. He was taken into custody by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say around 40 people were inside the bar during the shooting and urge anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
