ROCKY HILL, Conn. — Former Connecticut State Trooper Jose Campos, 32, has been arrested and charged with workers’ compensation fraud and first-degree larceny, according to the state Division of Criminal Justice.
Campos, of Winsted, turned himself in to Rocky Hill police on Tuesday following an investigation by the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Control Unit. He was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Wednesday.
Authorities allege Campos misrepresented the circumstances of a claimed on-duty injury. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Campos reported being hit by a restroom door at the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection headquarters—so forcefully, he claimed, that he was knocked to the floor and struck again multiple times as others entered the room.
However, witness accounts contradicted his story, leading investigators to question the legitimacy of the claim. Campos was placed on temporary total disability (TTD) status and collected $8,341 in replacement wages before the fraud was uncovered.
He now faces:
One count of first-degree larceny (1–10 years imprisonment, up to $10,000 fine)
One count of fraudulent receipt of benefits (1–20 years imprisonment, up to $15,000 fine)
In an unrelated case, Campos was arrested in 2023 on computer crime charges to which he has pleaded not guilty. Following that arrest, he was fully suspended without pay from the Connecticut State Police.
Additionally, Campos was under investigation for sexual assault allegations in 2022, according to state police records.
He is also expected in Waterbury court on Wednesday for a hearing related to the computer crimes case.
