Kolkata | October 11, 2025 – A former National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leader from Bihar, Rajeev Ranjan Kumar, has been arrested by the Bidhannagar Police for allegedly operating a fraud ring that defrauded victims of over Rs5.5 crore in West Bengal.

The accused, who contested the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections from Sasaram as a Bhartiya Sablog Party candidate, was arrested earlier this week following a raid in Bihar by the Bidhannagar Police Intelligence Unit.

Rajeev Ranjan had allegedly set up a fraudulent business operation from a rented house in Salt Lake, Kolkata, where he reportedly defrauded multiple individuals using forged documents and embezzlement tactics.

According to police:

On September 7, he was named in a case involving the embezzlement of Rs4.5 crore from Indrajit Chatterjee, a Salt Lake resident and former Calcutta High Court judge.

A second complaint was filed on September 14 by a resident of AJ Block, accusing Rajeev of forging documents to illegally sell a house worth Rs1 crore in Salt Lake’s CD Block.

Realizing he was under investigation, Rajeev allegedly fled to Bihar. Based on intelligence inputs, a police team tracked him to his hideout and executed a successful arrest operation.

“There are two fraud cases registered against him at Salt Lake East Police Station. The investigation is ongoing,” said a senior Bidhannagar Police officer.

Police believe the full scope of the scam may involve more victims and higher financial losses, and further details are expected as the investigation unfolds.
