KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has arrested Daquante Jones, a former Kinston police officer, on charges of theft.
The investigation began in June when the Lenoir County District Attorney’s Office requested the SBI to look into allegations that Jones stole money from a citizen involved in a vehicle accident in May 2024.
On Wednesday, Jones was charged with one count of theft from the person and one count of altering, destroying, or stealing criminal evidence. These actions reportedly occurred while he was on duty with the Kinston Police Department.
Jones was released on a $5,000 bond from the Lenoir County Magistrate’s Office. His first court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
Kinston Police Chief Keith Goyette stated, “The alleged actions do not reflect the values, integrity, and professionalism we uphold. We hold our officers to the highest standards and take swift action when those are broken. We recognize the seriousness of this matter and its effect on public trust. Accountability and transparency are our priorities.”
Following an internal investigation, Jones was terminated from the Kinston Police Department.
The SBI confirmed the investigation is ongoing.
