Evan Johnson Arrested, Kayla Malec Wins Court Case, James Charles Scrutinized

Domestic violence case sparks controversy and influencer backlash

by Amelia Crawford

In a dramatic turn of events, influencer Evan Johnson was arrested on 7 May 2025 following a high-profile domestic violence case involving content creator Kayla Malec. The case, which has captivated the public, reached a decisive moment in the Sumner County Courthouse, Tennessee, marking a significant victory for Malec after a nine-month legal battle.

Malec, visibly emotional, shared her victory on TikTok, expressing that “justice had been served.” Though the courthouse has not yet released detailed sentencing information, updates from both Malec and the authorities confirmed Johnson’s arrest. This arrest followed Johnson’s prior detainment in April for domestic assault and probation violation.

Throughout the ordeal, Johnson’s online statements were contradictory. While he acknowledged his mistakes, he also suggested that Malec had exaggerated the events, leading to public debates about accountability in abuse cases, especially when they are aired in the public domain. On the other hand, Malec’s transparency through social media, sharing updates on hearings and her emotional journey, rallied widespread support and highlighted the role of digital platforms in raising awareness.

Malec’s victory sparked a wave of online support, with the hashtag #JusticeForKayla trending on platforms like TikTok and X. Influencers like Jacob Sartorius publicly expressed their congratulations, while others shared their own stories of abuse. This widespread show of solidarity offered comfort and encouraged others to speak out.

However, the case also prompted questions about influencers’ responsibilities in such sensitive narratives. Johnson’s online presence raised concerns as many felt he used his platform to downplay the allegations. This controversy also brought James Charles into the spotlight. Since April 2025, rumors circulated about Charles’s involvement with Johnson, with TikToker Mikaela Testa alleging that Charles had been involved with Johnson both romantically and by housing him after his assault arrest. This led to a significant follower drop for Charles, with reports indicating a loss of approximately 700,000 followers on TikTok alone.

In response, Charles addressed the allegations on 7 May, stating, “I do not support Evan Johnson in any way, shape, or form.” He emphasized that his relationship with Johnson was brief and non-sexual and condemned Johnson’s actions towards Malec. Charles also revealed that he had reached out to Malec to clarify his stance but respected her decision not to engage. His statement was an attempt to distance himself from the controversy while reinforcing his position against violence.

The case not only highlights the devastating impact of abuse but also underscores the powerful role influencers can play in shaping public discourse around such issues.
