JONESBORO, Ark. — Authorities arrested Evan Douglas Rose after he allegedly shot and killed the family dog at a home near Highway 91 West on September 5.
Craighead County District Judge David Boling found probable cause to charge Rose with aggravated cruelty to a dog, cat, or horse, a Class D felony.
Police responded to a crisis intervention call and immediately detained Rose due to the nature of the incident and the possible involvement of firearms. Rose told officers he had been drinking and experienced a night terror during which his mother asked if he had shot the dog.
Upon investigating the home, officers discovered the dog had a bullet wound in its right front shoulder and was found dead in the kitchen. The complainant, who returned home around 11:30 a.m., said Rose was the only person at the house and was heard talking loudly in his room. Shell casings were found on the floor next to the dog.
When questioned, Rose denied shooting the dog but reportedly said he was talking to “his girl,” pointing to an empty side of the room. During a Mirandized interview, Rose refused to answer further questions.
Officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Rose and learned from his family that this was not the first time he had discharged a firearm inside the house. The firearm and other evidence were collected at the scene.
Rose was arrested and held on a $25,000 bond. He was released on September 10 but must wear an ankle monitor, avoid alcohol and illegal drugs, and not possess firearms. His next court date is set for October 30.
