Evan Bobzin, 39, of Chester, Connecticut, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for embezzling nearly $2 million from Hoffman’s Gun Center, where he worked as head of information technology. The embezzlement occurred between July 2013 and December 2023, when Bobzin began stealing cash receipts from a safe in the store’s front office.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut, Bobzin would arrive at work early, disable the store’s security camera systems, and steal thousands of dollars in cash from the safe. He deposited the stolen funds into his personal bank accounts, structuring the deposits to avoid detection. Between 2016 and 2023, Bobzin and his former spouse made 287 deposits, totaling $1.9 million, and purchased several cashier’s checks.
In addition to embezzling funds, Bobzin also failed to report the stolen money as income on his federal tax returns from 2016 through 2022, causing a loss of $436,178 to the IRS. His 2020 tax return alone omitted over $432,000 in income. Bobzin was charged with tax evasion and theft, and U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley ordered him to pay restitution of $2,062,580 to Hoffman’s Gun Center, along with $436,178 in taxes, penalties, and interest to the IRS.
Bobzin, who is currently free on a $50,000 bond, is scheduled to report to prison on January 6, 2025, to serve his sentence, which will be followed by three years of supervised release.
