Erwin Zuniga Arrested in Spain After Wrongful Deportation in Miami DUI Manslaughter Case
More than a year after being wrongfully deported to Honduras before trial, Erwin Zuniga, accused of causing a deadly triple fatal crash in Miami, has been captured overseas.
Zuniga was taken into custody in Spain, according to sources close to the investigation. Authorities are now coordinating his extradition back to Miami, where he faces 10 criminal charges, including DUI manslaughter.
The tragic crash occurred in February 2022 on West Flagler, claiming the lives of Paola Sabillon, her boyfriend Jason Meza, and his cousin Giselle Reyes. Police say Zuniga was driving impaired and at speeds exceeding 100 mph when he lost control and struck a gasoline station sign.
Last September, NBC6 reported that Zuniga had been wrongfully deported by immigration officials due to a custody mishandling error admitted by the Miami-Dade jail. This mistake delayed justice and left the victims’ families devastated.
Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department took responsibility for the deportation and promised disciplinary action for involved officers, though details of the investigation remain confidential.
The victims’ families have expressed relief and hope now that Zuniga has been apprehended abroad. There is currently no official timeline for his extradition back to Miami.
NBC6 has reached out to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office for comment but has not yet received a response.
