Ernakulam Rural Police arrested two West Bengal natives on Thursday for possessing 5.5 kilograms of ganja intended for sale. The accused individuals were identified as Bapparaj Islam (28) and Maimon Mandal (28), both hailing from West Bengal. The arrests were made by a police team led by Muvattupuzha Inspector Basil Thomas as part of Operation D Hunt, an ongoing anti-drug operation supervised by District Police Chief M Hemalatha.
The police operation resulted in the seizure of three kilograms of ganja at Thrikkalathoor Pallithazham, while another two-and-a-half kilograms was recovered from Muvattupuzha Hostel Junction. The police had been actively monitoring drug-related activities in the Muvattupuzha area and targeted the suspects as part of their crackdown on the illegal drug trade.
An investigation is currently underway to track down those who purchased the drugs from the accused. The case is being investigated under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) PM Baiju, with assistance from officers such as SIs Sumitha SN, Rajesh KK, Sathyan PB, and Jayakumar PC, along with Assistant Sub-Inspector Meeran CK and other police personnel.
In a separate incident, Perumbavoor police arrested Khairul Islam (39), a migrant labourer from Mariya Gav, Assam, who was allegedly using a chicken stall as a front for selling heroin and cannabis. The police team, led by Perumbavoor ASP Shakti Singh Arya, seized 24 vials of heroin and 20 packets of cannabis from the suspect. The heroin was being sold at a rate of Rs 1,000 per vial. The arrest was made following a tip-off, and the suspect had been under surveillance for some time.
The Perumbavoor police operation was part of their ongoing efforts to tackle the growing issue of drug trafficking in the area.
