EL PASO, Texas – Police have arrested 24-year-old Eric Lamarr Mathis in connection with the shooting death of 23-year-old Edward Daquan Smith after a fight at a party in far east El Paso in February.

The El Paso Police Department confirmed that Mathis was taken into custody at Fort Bliss on Monday and booked into the El Paso County Jail on a $1.5 million bond for murder.

Altercation Led to Deadly Gunfire
The shooting occurred on February 28 at a party in the 2100 block of Setting Sun Drive, near N. Zaragoza Road. Authorities believe a fight between the two men escalated, ending in gunfire.

By the time officers arrived at the scene, partygoers had fled, leaving behind the aftermath of the shooting.

Neighbors React to Violence in Their Community
Surveillance footage from a neighboring home captured the gunshots, startling residents in the typically quiet neighborhood.

“I’ve lived here for a while now, and this is a big shock. Nothing like this has ever happened,” said neighbor Andres Marquez. “We went outside with the neighbors and saw police arrive within minutes, trying to perform CPR.”

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
