Eric Hunter Arrested for Stealing 21 Transformers After Hurricane

Douglas man charged after transformers found in his yard post-storm

DOUGLAS, Ga. — Eric Hunter, 43, of Douglas, was arrested for allegedly stealing 21 transformers belonging to Satilla REMC in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

On August 27, 2025, a deputy responded to a call about recovered stolen items at 444 Island Drive in the Baymeadows community. Upon arrival, the deputy found several transformers scattered across the yard, all clearly visible. The transformers, valued at $9,800, were confirmed by officers to belong to Satilla REMC.

Hunter, who resides at the property, had recently been held in the Coffee County Jail on unrelated charges. According to the incident report, he admitted to collecting the transformers from various locations throughout the county following the hurricane. He acknowledged that what he did was wrong and apologized but added that “everyone was doing it.”

He was arrested and charged with three counts of theft by taking, booked into the Coffee County Jail, and later released.
