Gilberto Contreras, 54, of Ellenwood, Georgia, has pleaded guilty to possessing with the intent to distribute nearly 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia announced.
Court records show that on July 2, 2024, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) received a tip about a local trafficker with several kilograms of methamphetamine for sale. This led to an investigation in Clayton County, Georgia, where agents eventually encountered Contreras.
DEA agents stopped Contreras’s vehicle shortly after the encounter and discovered approximately 44 pounds of methamphetamine inside a black trash bag. A subsequent search of Contreras’s residence and backyard in Ellenwood revealed an additional 915 pounds of methamphetamine, along with $40,000 in cash.
Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie Jr. commented, “Contreras distributed massive quantities of dangerous drugs that posed a significant threat to the health and safety of our communities,” and praised the law enforcement team for their dedication to removing these drugs from the streets.
Contreras is scheduled to be sentenced on May 13, 2025, at 2 p.m. before U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Thrash Jr.
