OGUN STATE, NIGERIA — The Ogun State Police Command has arrested Elizabeth Thamson, a woman accused of defrauding three people of N8.5 million by promising them Canadian work visas.
The arrest follows warnings from the police about increasing online fraud schemes, including fake dating sites, travel scams, and fraudulent visa services.
In a statement, CSP Omolola Odutola said the victims were deceived into believing their visas had been approved after completing supposed biometric verification. When they presented the approval letters at the Visa Facilitation Service office in Lagos, authorities discovered the documents were fake.
“Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed,” Odutola added, noting that preliminary investigations revealed a fraudulent migration scheme targeting individuals desperate for overseas employment.
The state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered a discreet investigation and urged the public to verify information through official channels, exercise caution, and avoid unverified visa agents.
Despite repeated warnings, many Nigerians continue to fall victim to fake travel operators. In June, the Nigeria Police rescued Sammed Iddrisu, a Ghanaian national, who had been trafficked under similar false promises of migration to Europe.
