Police Say He Claimed to Have a Gun

by Sophia Bennett

An Iowa City man has been arrested after police say he robbed a local convenience store while claiming he had a gun.

Elenzie Porter, 54, is charged with second-degree robbery in connection with the incident, which occurred Sunday at the Casey’s located at 204 North Dubuque St.

According to a criminal complaint, Porter allegedly took $80 from the store after threatening to shoot the cashier and implying he was armed.

Authorities say surveillance cameras captured the suspect inside the gas station. After police released still images from the footage Tuesday seeking help from the public, multiple community members identified Porter as the suspect.

As of Wednesday afternoon, information regarding Porter’s initial court appearance and bond had not been made available.
