Edward Hillman Arrested Twice in One Day in Redding

Released after first arrest, now jailed on $50K bail for arson

REDDING, Calif. — A Redding man, 22-year-old Edward Hillman, was arrested twice in the same day last week, raising questions about his initial release from jail. Hillman is now being held in the Shasta County Jail on $50,000 bail.

His first arrest occurred around 3:30 a.m. Friday on River Bend Drive, where Redding Police say he threw rocks through a resident’s windows. Hillman was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and felony vandalism, but was released later that day.

Shasta County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Tim Mapes stated Hillman was released in accordance with jail policy due to the misdemeanor-level nature of the charges. The release followed standard booking evaluation procedures.

However, just hours later, Hillman was arrested again Friday night on Burton Court. This time, he allegedly attempted to light a chair on fire outside an apartment complex while under the influence of drugs. He was also charged with arson, disorderly conduct while under the influence, and resisting a peace officer.

Evidence of the arson attempt — a chair with burn marks and a drawn smiley face — was still visible on Monday.

As of now, Hillman remains in custody. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office did not confirm whether his initial release was connected to jail space concerns. However, last week, the jail did announce the temporary closure of one of its detention levels for construction.
