SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Edward Chao, 31, has been arrested in connection with a series of mailroom burglaries across Santa Clara, according to the Santa Clara Police Department.

Police announced the arrest on February 2 after detectives launched an investigation into a recent increase in mailroom break-ins. Investigators identified a Lexus RX SUV believed to be linked to the incidents. After locating the vehicle, the department’s special enforcement team conducted surveillance and secured an arrest warrant. Chao was taken into custody without incident.

Authorities said one burglary occurred December 10 at a residence on the 3500 block of Monroe Street. During the investigation, detectives recovered burglary tools and electronic devices allegedly used to gain access to apartment buildings and mailrooms. The discovery of the tools helped connect Chao to multiple incidents throughout the city.

Police noted that despite large-scale events such as the Super Bowl and FIFA World Cup, the department remains focused on neighborhood safety and crime prevention.

Residents are encouraged to promptly collect their mail, use secure outgoing mail options, and consider installing locking mailboxes or renting post office boxes. The United States Postal Service also offers an “Informed Delivery” service that provides digital previews of incoming mail to help detect potential theft.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue efforts to address mail theft in the community.
