EAST ALTON/GRANITE CITY — Two Madison County residents, Lindell Curtis of East Alton and Steven C. Melville II of Granite City, have been charged with serious domestic battery offenses involving strangulation and assault.
Lindell Curtis, 64, was charged on June 4, 2025, with a Class 2 felony for aggravated domestic battery and a Class A misdemeanor for domestic battery. Curtis allegedly strangled one family or household member and pushed another to the ground on May 5, 2025.
The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to deny Curtis’s pretrial release, noting that Curtis had been drinking before the incident. During the altercation, Curtis nearly strangled one victim to unconsciousness and caused another to fall by pushing them. The East Alton Police Department presented the case, and Curtis was ordered to remain in jail following his initial court appearance.
In a separate case, Steven C. Melville II, 41, was charged on June 1, 2025, with aggravated domestic battery (Class 2 felony) and a subsequent offense of domestic battery (Class 4 felony). Melville allegedly strangled and struck a family or household member on May 30, 2025. Melville has a prior domestic battery conviction from Franklin County, Illinois, in 2016.
The petition to deny Melville’s pretrial release cites the victim’s description of the violent encounter and visible injuries consistent with her statement. Additionally, officers observed marks on Melville’s face and chest. Melville was arrested by the Troy Police Department and remains in custody at Madison County Jail.
