EACC Arrests 4 Treasury Officials in Ksh10M Bribery Scheme
Four National Treasury employees have been arrested over bribery allegations involving a Ksh10.5 million scandal at Kenya’s Pensions Department.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) confirmed the arrests on Thursday, following a two-month undercover operation targeting corruption in the department.
The suspects are:
Wilkens Muhando Mugatsia, an intern
Henry Odhiambo Otira, Senior Pensions Officer
Catherine Muthoni Murage
Byrson Mark, Chief Clerical Officer
According to EACC, the suspects operated a criminal syndicate that extorted bribes from members of the public seeking services at the department.
Investigations revealed that the officials demanded payments via a paybill account registered under Mugatsia’s mother. The account was allegedly used to fast-track service delivery in exchange for bribes.
Over the past two years, the paybill account processed transactions totaling Ksh10,523,044, with the suspects pocketing different amounts.
The four were booked at Integrity Centre Police Station before being transferred to Kilimani Police Station for further investigation.
In a statement, EACC reiterated its commitment to eliminating bribery in public offices and restoring trust in public service delivery:
“The Commission is determined to tackle bribery at service points to ensure equitable access to services for all citizens,” EACC said.
