Mobile, Ala. (WPMI) — A Mobile-based insurance agent has been arrested on multiple charges, including six counts of first-degree insurance fraud, identity theft, and possession of a forged instrument.
According to Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood, 48-year-old Dwight Dean is accused of fraudulently issuing fake certificates of insurance to at least two small businesses.
“There are multiple victims,” Blackwood stated. “The primary victim is the insurance company that was defrauded, but also the small businesses that unknowingly received fraudulent certificates. These businesses believed they had valid coverage, which could leave them vulnerable to significant civil liabilities.”
Dean’s former employer revealed that he was terminated last year for an unrelated matter. However, discrepancies in the insurance certificates were later discovered, prompting a report to the Alabama Department of Insurance.
The investigation remains ongoing.
