GREENTOWN, Ind. — A local salesman at Truland Equipment in Swayzee, Dustin Echelbarger, 43, has been arrested for allegedly stealing over $1.4 million by fraudulently taking out loans and fabricating purchase orders in the names of local farmers.
Indiana State Police arrested Echelbarger Friday following an eight-month investigation led by detectives from the Indiana State Police Peru Post. Authorities first received tips in October regarding Echelbarger’s alleged involvement in fraud, forgery, and corrupt business practices.
While working as a farm equipment salesman, Echelbarger reportedly engaged in illicit activity involving the buying, selling, and trading of equipment across northern Indiana. He is accused of collecting over $750,000 through fake purchase orders and securing more than $650,000 in loans using the identities of unsuspecting farmers.
Several Hoosier farmers suddenly faced thousands of dollars in debt due to Echelbarger’s schemes, according to reports from Successful Farming.
One victim, Kimberly Hannah, expressed relief following the arrest, calling Echelbarger a “heartless thief” who caused severe damage to farms, families, and local communities.
Echelbarger faces 17 felony charges, including Level 5 and Level 6 felonies. In Indiana, Level 5 felonies carry a maximum prison sentence of six years.
