DURHAM, NC — A man arrested in connection with a recent armed carjacking now faces additional charges after authorities say he provided a false identity during his arrest.
Enrico Jerome Farrington Jr., 34, of Durham, has been charged with identity theft and resisting a public officer after he allegedly gave law enforcement his sibling’s personal information during a Sept. 3 arrest. Farrington was initially taken into custody for his alleged involvement in a violent carjacking, according to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO).
Authorities say the incident occurred when Farrington asked a driver for a ride, then pulled a knife on the individual and fled in the victim’s Infiniti SUV. Deputies located the stolen vehicle shortly after and found Farrington hiding in a nearby residence, where he was arrested without further incident.
The identity theft charge was added after family members saw a news article naming the wrong individual and contacted law enforcement. Working with the District Attorney’s Office, DCSO quickly verified the false identification and issued additional warrants for Farrington.
Farrington now faces the following charges:
Robbery with a dangerous weapon
Larceny of a motor vehicle
Felony possession of cocaine
Misdemeanor larceny
Identity theft
Resisting, delaying, or obstructing a public officer
He remains in custody at the Durham County Detention Facility with a bond set at $235,000. Officials also noted Farrington has multiple failures to appear on previous charges.
The investigation is ongoing.
