Duane “Keefe D” Davis, the former gang member arrested in connection with the 1996 shooting death of Tupac Shakur, has been sentenced to a prison term following a jailhouse fight.
While awaiting trial for Tupac’s murder, Davis was convicted by a jury of battery by a prisoner and challenges to fight after a physical altercation with another inmate at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas. According to KNTV, Davis received a sentence ranging from a minimum of 16 months to a maximum of 40 months, with credit given for time already served.
TMZ reported that the fight involved “mutual combat” where Davis and the other inmate exchanged closed fist strikes, and Davis reportedly put the other inmate in a headlock. The brawl was eventually broken up after a corrections officer deployed pepper spray.
Davis reportedly told officers that he was “just standing his ground” during the incident.
Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, dying six days later at age 25. Davis has long been a suspect in the case and has publicly admitted to being present in the vehicle during the shooting. In his 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend, Davis detailed his involvement and claimed to have supplied the murder weapon.
His September 2023 arrest followed a police raid on his wife’s home in Henderson, where authorities seized computers, a cellphone, a hard drive, bullets, photos, and a copy of Davis’ memoir, among other items.
Las Vegas homicide Lt. Jason Johansson described Davis as the “shot caller” who orchestrated the murder plan.
Davis’ trial for Tupac’s murder is scheduled to begin February 9, 2026.
