Duane Geel, 67, Faces Charges of Gross Sexual Assault in Maine

Former School Bus Driver Charged with Six Counts of Sexual Assault

by Amelia Crawford

Duane Geel, 67, of Wesley, Maine, appeared in court for the first time on Friday, facing charges of gross sexual assault involving a minor. Geel, who was arrested on Thursday, is charged with six counts of gross sexual assault after what authorities are calling an extended investigation.

Geel, a former school bus driver for AOS 96, resigned from his position in 2023, although the school’s website still lists him as a driver and custodian.

The details of the case remain largely sealed, but the prosecutor indicated that Geel’s alleged actions have had a profound impact. Deputy District Attorney Toff Toffolon argued for a $100,000 bail, citing the severity of the charges and the potential consequences, despite Geel’s lack of prior criminal history.

Defense Attorney Patricia VanRollins asserted that Geel is presumed innocent and that holding someone with no criminal background on such a high bail would be unjust. However, Judge David Mitchell ruled that there was probable cause to believe the crimes occurred, citing the seriousness of the allegations and concerns for the public’s safety, particularly regarding the minor victim.

Geel remains in custody at the Washington County Jail, with bail set at $100,000. The judge has also imposed a no-contact order, prohibiting Geel from contacting the alleged victim or any minors under the age of 18.
