In a serious violation of medical law, a doctor and a mediator were arrested on Friday in Salem for illegally revealing the sex of a foetus.
Based on a tip-off, a team led by Salem District Joint Director of Medical Services, Dr. Nandhini, conducted a surprise raid at the ultrasound scan room of the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital. During the raid, hospital doctor Dr. Thiyagarajan was caught disclosing the foetal sex to a pregnant woman.
The team immediately apprehended Dr. Thiyagarajan and a mediator identified as Sri Ram, and handed them over to the police at the Salem Government Hospital station. A formal case has been registered, and both have been taken into custody for further investigation.
Authorities are likely to pursue charges under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, which prohibits sex determination of unborn children to prevent gender-based abortions.
