Dr. Stanford Chigumira, a trained medical doctor and Director for Health Services in Zanu-PF, has been arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC). He faces allegations of soliciting a US$500 bribe from Mirriam Mverechena to secure a spot for her son in the Primary Care Nurse Training Course for the September 2024 intake.
According to ZACC, the alleged incident occurred when Mverechena’s son was not granted admission to the program, despite the bribe payment. Distressed by the situation, Mverechena reported the incident to both the Ministry of Health and ZACC, which prompted an investigation and led to Chigumira’s arrest.
ZACC’s statement revealed that Chigumira had been soliciting and receiving the $500 to facilitate the entry into the program. This case has raised significant concerns about corruption within Zimbabwe’s health sector, particularly regarding recruitment processes for training programs.
Chigumira is scheduled to appear in Harare Magistrate Court on Saturday, December 14, 2024, to face the charges. The arrest is part of ZACC’s continued efforts to combat corruption in various sectors across the country.
