(FOX 2) — A federal jury has convicted Southfield-based physician Dr. Reginald Eburuche of bank fraud after he illegally obtained a $1.7 million loan under the federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) meant to help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan announced the conviction, revealing that Eburuche submitted fraudulent documents and lied about the number of employees at his startup, Renovis Healthcare, when applying for the loan in July 2020.

Prosecutors said Eburuche initially tried to secure a traditional line of credit and, when that failed, turned to the PPP. To qualify, he submitted falsified payroll data and fake tax documents to make his business appear eligible for the federal relief funds.

The jury returned a guilty verdict on May 29.

“When a licensed professional chooses fraud over integrity, the harm runs deeper than dollars,” said U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon. “Dr. Eburuche stole money meant to keep workers afloat during a time of crisis. This office will continue to pursue those who exploited these programs for personal gain.”

Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.
