In a major anti-narcotics operation, security forces in Manipur arrested two drug peddlers, including a woman, and recovered narcotics worth over Rs2.84 crore and cash amounting to Rs37.5 lakh in Churachandpur district, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The first arrest took place on Friday night in Mongkot Khopi village, where police detained:
Doukholet Hanghal (52)
A raid on his residence led to the seizure of:
870 grams of brown sugar worth Rs1.74 crore
20 soap cases of heroin (260 grams) worth Rs52 lakh
Rs29.5 lakh cash, allegedly from drug dealings
2 radio sets and 1 mobile phone
In a separate operation the same night, police arrested a woman from Tangnuam village:
Chigenvung (46)
Seizures from her home included:
25 soap cases containing brown sugar (289 grams) worth around Rs60 lakh
Rs8 lakh cash
1 mobile phone
According to police, both suspects are linked to cross-border drug smuggling. The Churachandpur district shares an unfenced border with Myanmar, a known route for narcotics trafficking into India.
Security officials emphasized that these operations form part of intensified efforts to curb cross-border narcotics trade, particularly given the volatility along the international boundary.
Further investigation is ongoing, with police probing connections to broader smuggling networks across Myanmar and Northeast India.
