Douglas Akunnor Among Three Arrested in Car Theft Case

Stolen Hyundai Recovered, Mastermind at Large

by Sophia Bennett

The Central East Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals in connection with a sophisticated vehicle theft case.

Douglas Kwame Akunnor, a steel bender; Emmanuel Aduah, a trader; and Richard Baidoo, an entrepreneur, allegedly approached a businessman in Kakraba, Gomoa East District, on November 24, 2025, to purchase a 2021 Hyundai Elantra registered under trade plate DV 6060-W.

On that day, Akunnor and Aduah handed over a signed cash cheque worth GHS 210,000 on behalf of Albert Akwasi Ofori, who remains at large and is identified as the mastermind. Shortly after the cheque was deposited, the transaction was reversed, prompting the businessman to report the suspicious activity to police.

Investigators, led by D/Inspector Emmanuel Owusu Danquah with support from D/Inspector Andrews Essel, D/Lance Corporal Prince Nketiah, and G/Lance Corporal Jones Boateng, conducted extensive inquiries that resulted in the arrests of Aduah on January 2, 2026, while attempting to unlock his SIM card in the Western Region, and Akunnor shortly afterward. Both suspects admitted their roles in the theft and demonstrated how the crime was carried out.

The stolen Hyundai, which had been repainted from red to black and fitted with a counterfeit plate GX 3856-21, was later found in Nsakina in the possession of Richard Baidoo, who was promptly arrested.

The three suspects were arraigned at the Kasoa Ofankor Circuit Court on January 6, 2026, and remanded to reappear on January 28. Police continue their investigation and are actively seeking Albert Akwasi Ofori.
