BATON ROUGE — Baton Rouge Police have identified multiple suspects in a check fraud investigation that escalated into gunfire and injuries near a bank on Monday afternoon.
Police said Dorsay Jones, 36, was arrested after he and 28-year-old Taylor Almond allegedly entered Gulf Coast Bank near the intersection of Jefferson Highway and Thibodeaux Avenue around 1 p.m. and attempted to cash a fraudulent check valued at approximately $1,800. A bank teller became suspicious, requested additional verification, and confirmed the check was fraudulent before notifying police.
As officers arrived, several individuals were reportedly waiting inside a vehicle outside the bank. During the police response, a gunshot was fired inside the vehicle, and investigators later determined that Larry Scott Jr. accidentally shot himself while attempting to hide the firearm from officers.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as suspects fled the area.
“Everybody had their guns drawn,” said witness Catherine Montour. “We thought he was shot. We didn’t know if he was alive.”
While responding to the incident, two Baton Rouge Police Department units collided at the intersection of Goodwood Boulevard and East Airport Avenue. One officer sustained a minor injury, according to WBRZ.
Scott was transported to a hospital for treatment and later booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on drug and firearm charges. Police said Scott was found in possession of a large quantity of Schedule II controlled substances.
Jones was booked on forgery and monetary instrument abuse charges. Court records show he has a criminal history that includes multiple drug convictions, DUI offenses, and domestic abuse battery, with his most recent sentence served in 2024.
Police said Taylor Almond remains at large, and the investigation is ongoing.
