LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — A DoorDash driver was arrested after a doorbell camera captured him stealing a package from a porch in Lakeland, authorities said.
The investigation began Jan. 26 when deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home after a resident reported a stolen package. Video from the resident’s Ring camera showed a man wearing a hoodie and baseball cap carrying an empty DoorDash delivery bag to the front door, where he took a package valued at about $70 and fled in a dark-colored SUV.
The next day, the resident called back after finding the discarded box near her trash bins with its contents missing. Deputies collected fingerprints from the box, which matched 36-year-old Carlos Silva. Investigators also confirmed Silva’s vehicle was in the area at the time of the theft, and a family member told detectives that Silva worked for DoorDash.
Silva was located at Lake Miriam Plaza and taken into custody. He was charged with unarmed burglary and grand theft from a dwelling.
Silva is a Venezuelan national who was in the United States with a pending immigration application. After his arrest, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was notified and revoked his immigration status, issuing an immigration detainer due to the criminal charges.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Silva’s decision to commit a crime undermined his chance to remain in the country legally, underscoring that criminal actions carry serious consequences.
