A Peterborough man, Donatas Veckas, 37, has been jailed after being caught shoplifting again, despite having received a suspended sentence for a previous offense.
On May 12, 2024, Veckas entered the Esso petrol station on Welland Road, Dogsthorpe, and concealed cooking oil and multipacks of chocolate valued at £28.50. He proceeded to the counter with a tin of mackerel, paid for it, and left without paying for the hidden items.
After an investigation, Veckas was arrested at his home on Dogsthorpe Road on June 9, 2024. He was charged with three counts of theft from a shop after it was revealed he had stolen from two other stores as well.
At Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on June 10, Veckas received a 12-week prison sentence. The sentence includes the activation of a suspended sentence he had previously received on May 31 for four separate shoplifting offenses.
PC Exposito, who handled the investigation, commented, “Veckas attempted to evade detection by paying for one item, but thanks to the vigilance of the affected businesses, we were able to track him down and make the arrest.”
Additionally, Veckas is now bound by a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) issued in May. This order prohibits him from entering certain retail stores in Peterborough, including Lidl, Savers, and Tesco locations, as well as Sainsbury’s on Oxney Road and Asda in Rivergate. Any violations of the CBO will result in immediate arrest and further court proceedings.
