WARREN, MICH. — A Southeast Michigan man has pleaded no contest to multiple charges in the 2023 shooting death of his roommate, including second-degree homicide, evidence tampering, and concealing a death, according to Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
Donald Dawan Renfroe, 26, entered the plea Monday in Macomb County Circuit Court for the killing of James Wilkins, whose body was discovered five months after he was reported missing. The shooting occurred on June 8, 2023, at an apartment in Warren, Michigan.
Authorities say Renfroe, along with accomplice Darius Glenn, initially concealed the crime. Warren Police later discovered evidence of a shooting at the apartment. The investigation led to the recovery of Wilkins’ body and charges against both men.
Glenn entered into a plea bargain and testified against Renfroe during a preliminary examination held on April 26, providing key details that helped prosecutors build their case.
Renfroe pleaded no contest to the following charges:
Second-Degree Homicide (life or any number of years)
Tampering with Evidence (up to 10 years)
Concealing the Death of an Individual (up to 5 years)
Felony Firearm (mandatory 2-year consecutive sentence)
Sentencing is scheduled for July 7.
In a statement, Prosecutor Lucido emphasized the impact of the crime:
“Mr. Wilkin’s life was cut short in the very dwelling that should have been his safe place. My office stands as the voice of the victim to bring justice to this horrible act that stole this victim’s life and destroyed a family.”
