In a disturbing incident in Samaguri, Nagaon district, Dibyajyoti Saikia, also known as Dadul Saikia, was arrested for allegedly causing the death of a dog that had reportedly eaten chickens from his poultry farm. On Thursday, Saikia struck the dog on the head with a bamboo stick, leading to fatal injuries. Saikia claimed that the dog had taken several chickens from his farm during the previous week, justifying his violent act.
The situation escalated after a video surfaced on social media, showing five puppies nursing from the deceased mother dog. The puppies were just two days old when their mother was killed, and the footage quickly went viral, stirring public outrage. People were particularly shocked by the cruelty of the act, which led to widespread condemnation.
In response to the public outcry, authorities initiated a suo-motu case and apprehended Saikia from his home on Thursday night. He is currently under judicial detention, as investigations into the incident continue. The case has sparked a broader conversation about animal cruelty and the treatment of animals in rural areas.
Authorities are now focusing on ensuring justice for the deceased dog and her puppies, while animal rights activists are calling for stronger measures to protect animals from such acts of violence.
