Dispur Police foil fake snatching to cover embezzlement

by Ananya Mehta

Dispur Police on Tuesday arrested Dhruba Kalita, a resident of Sipajhar town in Darrang district, for embezzling Rs7 lakh from his employer and filing a fraudulent complaint to conceal the theft.

Kalita, who was staying at a rented house in Guwahati’s Sarusajai area, is an employee of a private company. On Monday afternoon, he reported a fake snatching incident at the Bhagaduttapur police outpost, claiming that unidentified robbers had sedated him with a spray and stolen the money.

Police quickly investigated, reviewing CCTV footage which revealed inconsistencies in his statements. Further inquiry confirmed that no snatching occurred and that Kalita had hidden the full amount at his rented residence. The entire Rs7 lakh has since been recovered.

Following the investigation, Dispur Police arrested Kalita and registered a suo motu case under relevant sections of the BNS Act. OC Bhaskar Malla Patowary confirmed that the case is based on evidence of fund misappropriation and submission of false information intended to mislead authorities.
