Police have apprehended 45-year-old Dhiraj Tomar, more than 25 years after he allegedly committed a series of robberies-cum-murders targeting taxi drivers across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. A team from the New Delhi Range Crime Branch tracked him to his village, Sikanderpur Kalan in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Tomar had been living under a false identity, separate from his family, to evade law enforcement for over two decades. Police reportedly deployed informers to monitor his movements before making the arrest.
“The case dates back to March 17, 2001, when two male bodies were reported near B-2, Mayur Vihar Phase III. One victim died in the hospital, while the other survived due to timely medical intervention. Two of Tomar’s accomplices were arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment, while he and another associate were declared proclaimed offenders,” said DCP (Crime) Pankaj Kumar.
According to police, Tomar’s gang would hire taxis, murder the drivers, steal the vehicles, and dispose of the bodies in remote mountainous regions. The stolen vehicles were then reportedly sold in Nepal.
Tomar has confessed to involvement not only in multiple murder cases but also in additional murders, robberies, and abductions in Almora, Haldwani, Lohaghat, and other areas of Uttarakhand.
