Two cyber fraudsters have been arrested from Rajasthan for allegedly cheating a Delhi resident of Rs5.63 lakh in an online investment scam, police said on Tuesday.
The arrests were made in connection with an e-FIR registered on January 25 following a complaint by Jitender, a 32-year-old resident of Gokalpuri in northeast Delhi.
According to police, the victim was lured by fraudsters who promised unusually high returns within a short period through online investment opportunities. Trusting the claims, Jitender transferred Rs5.63 lakh to accounts shared by the accused.
During the investigation, police examined digital evidence, banking transactions, and other technical data to trace the money trail and identify those involved. Based on specific leads, a police team conducted raids in Rajasthan and apprehended Dhanpal Meena (28) from the Bundi area.
During interrogation, Meena allegedly admitted to his role in the fraud and revealed the involvement of his associate Sita Ram (23), a resident of Tonk district. Acting on this information, police arrested Ram as well.
Four mobile phones and other electronic devices allegedly used to carry out the scam were recovered from the accused, police said.
Investigators revealed that the accused created fake online investment profiles displaying exaggerated and false returns to gain the confidence of victims. After initial investments were made, victims were allegedly asked to pay additional amounts under the guise of GST, processing fees, and other charges. Once the money was transferred, the accused reportedly cut off all communication.
Police said further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused are linked to other similar online investment fraud cases and to identify additional members of the cyber crime network.
