Dewayne E. Jones Jr. Found Guilty in Carbondale Murder

Faces 45 years to life for fatal shooting of Rayshaun Simon

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) — A Carbondale man has been found guilty of murder following a five-day jury trial in Jackson County Circuit Court.

On Friday, April 4, 39-year-old Dewayne E. Jones Jr. was convicted of first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection to the fatal shooting of Rayshaun L. Simon on April 28, 2023.

According to the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, the shooting occurred at 700 South Lewis Lane in Carbondale. When police arrived, they found Simon suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.

The case was built on evidence presented by the state, including testimonies and forensic findings. The Carbondale Police Department, with assistance from the Southern Illinois University Department of Public Safety, led the investigation.

Jones now faces a prison sentence ranging from 45 years to natural life in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.
