by Amelia Crawford

Two Massachusetts men, Dev Patel, 19, of Westford, and Love Patel, 24, of Mansfield, have been arrested for defrauding a woman out of $40,000 in a PayPal scam. They posed as Department of Justice (DOJ) employees while targeting the victim.

According to Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr., the scammers initially contacted the woman, claiming to be conducting a DOJ investigation. They convinced her to send $40,000 to them via PayPal.

After the woman reported the scam to the authorities, Detective David Davol learned the fraudsters planned to return the next day to collect an additional $32,000. Deputies waited for the suspects at the woman’s home, and when the men arrived on Wednesday, they were arrested.

Dev Patel and Love Patel have been charged with theft by deception and taken to Franklin County Jail in Farmington, where they remain in custody. The case is still under investigation, with police notifying the “appropriate federal authorities” about the scam.

This incident highlights the growing problem of scammers posing as government workers, and local law enforcement continues to warn the public to be cautious when handling unsolicited requests for money.
