MARLBORO COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — A Marlboro County man made a dramatic attempt to avoid arrest on Sunday by jumping from a moving police vehicle, authorities said.
According to the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), Derrick Staggers was being taken into custody in connection with a burglary warrant in the Clio area when he resisted arrest, prompting officers to deploy a taser. Despite the use of force, Staggers led officers on a brief foot chase before being captured and handcuffed.
While being transported to the Marlboro County Detention Center by Investigator Herring, Staggers attempted to escape again—this time by jumping out of the moving patrol vehicle. He sustained injuries and was immediately taken to a nearby emergency room for treatment.
After receiving medical clearance, he was booked into the detention center. Staggers now faces a list of charges including:
Burglary
Two counts of resisting arrest
Aggravated breach of peace
Two counts of escape
A bond hearing is expected later this evening. MCSO officials say they are conducting an internal review to confirm whether all arrest and transport procedures were properly followed during the incident.
