FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A northern Virginia man, 28-year-old Derling Gustavo Hernandez, is behind bars after police say he burglarized a home and stole a car in Fairfax County.
The incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, May 27, when officers responded to a burglary report on the 9500 block of Millgate Place. The homeowner told FOX 5 that Hernandez entered the home through an open window and proceeded to open the garage. Disturbingly, the suspect allegedly told the homeowner and her son that he “owned their home.”
The homeowner’s son confronted Hernandez with a knife and promptly called the police. Hernandez then fled the scene by stealing a nearby vehicle.
Police quickly located the stolen car near the residence and arrested Hernandez. Authorities say the car was taken from outside the Fairfax County courthouse, where Hernandez had been released earlier that day.
Hernandez remains in jail without bond, facing multiple charges including burglary, grand larceny, and auto theft.
