ROBBINS, N.C. — A Moore County teacher has been arrested and charged with multiple felony sex offenses involving a student from nearly two decades ago.

Dennis Bannick, 60, of Robbins, was taken into custody Thursday by Caswell County Sheriff’s deputies at the Dollar General located at 120 Highway 705 in Robbins. Bannick currently teaches physical education and health at Elise Middle School and serves as an assistant football coach at North Moore High School, according to the Moore County Schools website.

The charges stem from alleged incidents that occurred in 2006 at Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville, where Bannick was employed at the time. According to the arrest warrant, the alleged victim was a student at the same high school.

The arrest warrant outlines four counts of felony sex offense with a student, with the alleged offenses taking place on August 1 and October 1, 2006.

Moore County Schools released a statement acknowledging the arrest and stated that the allegations do not involve any current students.

“While charges are allegations and not convictions, we are deeply troubled by this news. The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority,” said Charlie Batchelor, Director of Communications for Moore County Schools.

Counselors have been made available at both Elise Middle School and North Moore High School to support students and staff.

Bannick is being held on a $75,000 secured bond. His case is being handled by the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office, which is located in the Piedmont Triad region near the Virginia border.
