MARKHAM, Ill. — A Chicago Heights man has been charged with reckless homicide after a high-speed crash on Interstate 57 last year killed two people, authorities said.
Demitreaun Ross, 20, faces two counts of reckless homicide, two counts of failure to report a fatal accident, and one count of criminal trespass to a vehicle, according to the Illinois State Police.
Cook County prosecutors said Ross was driving a stolen car at more than 100 mph on Jan. 29, 2025, weaving through traffic in the northbound lanes of I-57. His vehicle struck two other cars, causing it to roll over.
Several people were ejected from their vehicles in the crash. Two victims, Terry Felder and Antionette Nelson, died at the scene, while two others sustained injuries, prosecutors said.
Ross fled the scene and did not report the crash to police. DNA evidence later confirmed him as the driver responsible.
At his first court appearance on Saturday, a judge ordered Ross held in jail pending trial. He is scheduled to return to court on Tuesday in Markham.
