The Delhi Police have arrested a 40-year-old proclaimed offender for allegedly cheating a woman of her gold ornaments and cash in northwest Delhi, officials said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Rahul, was arrested from the Model Town area after police tracked the movement of his vehicle using a GPS device. The car used to carry out the crime was also recovered.
According to police, Rahul is a habitual criminal with involvement in at least nine criminal cases, including robbery, snatching, theft and culpable homicide. He is also a proclaimed offender in seven cases. Additional Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Bhisham Singh stated that the accused committed such crimes to earn easy money.
The incident occurred on January 18, when a 55-year-old woman was travelling from her residence to Uttam Nagar. While waiting at the Haiderpur bus stand, she was approached by occupants of a car who claimed to be bank officials and offered her a lift.
After she boarded the vehicle, the accused convinced her to hand over her gold ornaments and cash for verification, claiming they were also depositing their own money. Trusting them, the woman handed over two gold rings, two ear tops, and Rs5,000 in cash.
Moments later, the accused asked her to get down quickly and handed her an envelope, saying bank officials had arrived. Upon checking the envelope, the woman found only papers inside, while the accused fled with her valuables.
The victim later lodged a complaint with the police. Acting on technical surveillance and vehicle tracking, police traced the car involved and arrested the accused. Further investigation in the case is underway.
