The Delhi Police have cracked down on a syndicate accused of cheating people by impersonating bank employees and offering fake credit card rewards. Five key members of the gang were arrested following an investigation triggered by a complaint from a Palam Colony resident who lost Rs 96,000 after receiving a fraudulent call.
Officials revealed that the gang contacted victims pretending to be bank officials, using partial credit card details to build trust. They convinced victims to share OTPs under the pretense of redeeming credit card reward points. Using these OTPs, the fraudsters transferred money from victims’ accounts into mule bank accounts controlled by them.
“The gang collected credit card details and OTPs from unsuspecting victims and moved the defrauded money through several bank accounts,” said a police officer. CCTV footage confirmed one accused withdrawing cash while concealing his identity.
A police raid in Mohan Garden resulted in the arrest of three accused: Atul Kumar, Sunny Kumar Singh, and Kaushal Kumar. Authorities seized multiple bank account kits, firm stamps, mobile phones, and digital devices.
Interrogations revealed that Kaushal Kumar, a former private bank employee, was instrumental in opening multiple mule accounts from a rented location in Mohan Garden. These accounts were then leased to cybercriminals through a female accomplice, who was also arrested.
Sunny Kumar Singh, a final-year CA student, assisted by creating GST and Udyam certificates and email IDs to facilitate account openings. Atul Kumar, in whose name the fraudulent firm was registered, controlled three bank accounts used in the scam.
The key caller impersonating bank officials was identified as Md Ahmad, a former call centre employee and a suspect in another cyber fraud case. Ahmad had been evading arrest but was apprehended following leads obtained during the investigation.
“All accused — Md Ahmad, Kaushal Kumar, Atul Kumar, Sunny Kumar Singh, and the woman — have been arrested. The investigation is ongoing,” police confirmed.
