Delhi Police arrested a 37-year-old man, Jitender Mehta alias Jeet, from Ludhiana, Punjab, for fleeing with Rs27 lakh entrusted to him by his employer. Mehta worked in a private company located in northwest Delhi’s Model Town area.
The complainant, Ram Kumar Verma of Gagan Vihar, filed a report on July 18 stating that Mehta had collected the cash from the office on July 15 but disappeared soon after, taking a scooter belonging to Verma as well.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast), Bhisham Singh, stated that after receiving the complaint, police teams analyzed CCTV footage and tracked Mehta’s location through technical surveillance. Mehta was apprehended on July 20 while attempting to move to another location to avoid arrest.
During interrogation, Mehta confessed to stealing the money. He was employed as an equity dealer and was trusted with cash collection duties. He used the stolen scooter to flee and attempted to maintain a lavish lifestyle with the stolen funds.
Police recovered Rs14.05 lakh in cash, the stolen scooter, and a mobile phone purchased with the stolen money. They also traced Rs10.5 lakh in two bank accounts linked to Mehta. The remaining amount is still missing.
Authorities confirmed Mehta had no prior criminal record and investigations are ongoing to recover the remaining funds.
