Delhi Police have arrested Monish (26), a bus helper, for allegedly stealing USD 1,600 from the purse of an Iranian woman who had left it on a private bus at ISBT Kashmere Gate. The cash was fully recovered.

The incident occurred on December 15, when Fareshteh Sayanjali, an Iranian national visiting India, inadvertently left her purse on a bus seat while returning from Rishikesh. Her host, Dr Ali Akbar Shah, a Delhi University professor from Mukherjee Nagar, lodged a complaint after the woman noticed the money missing.

Police registered an FIR at Kashmere Gate Police Station on December 16. During the investigation, the bus driver and conductor were questioned. The conductor revealed that Monish had found the purse and handed it to him. Monish initially tried to mislead authorities but later confessed to stealing the cash.

Monish, a resident of Jahangirpuri, North Delhi, has studied up to Class 10 and had been working as a helper with the private bus service for the past year. He was arrested on December 17, and the stolen amount was recovered in full.
