FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man has been arrested in connection with what police are calling a “sophisticated” courier scam that defrauded a Fresno resident out of thousands.
According to Fresno police, the suspect posed as a law enforcement officer and contacted the victim via text message. The messages falsely claimed the victim’s credit cards had been used to purchase illegal materials online.
In an attempt to avoid “arrest,” the victim was pressured into handing over a $30,000 cash payment.
Authorities identified and arrested 32-year-old Dehua Zou for his alleged role in orchestrating the scam. Zou was taken into custody on August 22 and booked into the Fresno County Jail.
Police are urging the public to remain cautious of similar schemes involving impersonation and financial extortion.
